Fine!! I'm Ready!!

A few days ago I wasn't so sure I was ready to give up the hope for a few days of summer weather. However, after glancing at weather reports, the chilly temperatures are here to stay for the next couple of weeks. I'm sure that I won't see summer weather until next summer.

I realized too that tomorrow is October 1st. My favorite month! A friend of mine told me last night that he decorated his house for Halloween. After seeing pictures I was inspired to get into this time of year in full swing. I said goodbye to the summer months, warm weather and sultry summer nights.

So, today I went out and bought pumpkins, corn stalks, Mums and Indian Corn. The inside of the car smelled like Autumn with everything piled in it. We hung the cornstalks on each side of the front porch, put the yellow Mums beside the corn stalks, put the burgundy Mums on each side of the bale of hay (topped with little sugar pumpkins) and hung the Indian Corn on the mailbox. The big pumpkin that will be carved on Halloween sits inside the house.

I shut the windows, put the down comforter on the bed, took out the flannel sheets and broke out some fleece hoodies. There is a nice roaster chicken in the fridge to be cooked for a "Happy October 1st" dinner tomorrow night and we stocked up on hot chocolate. We put our Autumn table cloth and runner on the table and put our decorative Autumn colored leaves around the table centerpiece.

And with that, I am ready for October 1st. The outside will be decorated for Halloween this weekend as will the inside. Now all I need is a warm pair of slippers.....(the dog chewed mine up last year).

Cold Weather Comfort Foods

With the chilly weather upon us and October just around the corner (two more days!) I find myself craving the cold weather comfort foods. I find that I am crinkling up my face at the thought of salads and other cold foods. During the spring and summer months I could eat salads every day of the week, but now I'm thinking about big bowls of homemade soups and stews.

I'm not sure if this holds true for all of us, but my choices in foods tend to change along with the weather. Usually the end of September I start craving apples...a fruit that I don't normally eat or even think about for most of the year. However, for the past week all I can think about is the crunch of crisp, sweet apples. I think about making my yearly apple pies and apple crisps. By the time the end of November hits, the craving usually wears off.

This time of year I break out my big soup kettles. My mouth salivates at the thought of my homemade garlic chicken veggie soup or my homemade french onion soup. I make huge batches and freeze them to enjoy on days that I have no time to cook. Once in a while I indulge in a long time favorite of clam or fish 'chowda'. I am from New England and 'chowda' was a staple for us.

This time of year I also make lots of pot roasts (with finely diced apples) and whole roaster chickens that bake in the oven with lots of Autumn vegetables. The oven warms the downstairs up just enough to take the chill out and fills the house with such a cozy aroma. Light a couple of Cinnamon & Sugar Candles and it's the perfect night.

So get out your soup kettles and pie pans and start cooking!!

Not Sure If I'm Ready

Next week I'll be on vacation (*does the happy dance*) and will be painting and redecorating the dining room for the first half. I went to the local online weather site and discovered that starting Tuesday high temps will only be in the low 60's and one day the high will only be 58! I gasped! The thought of possibly having to turn on the heat this early made me cringe a bit.

Last year at this time we were cranky and miserable from the non stop heat waves that kept hitting us. Even through October it was unseasonably hot and we didn't have Fall Foliage Peak until the beginning of November. I remember standing outside in the middle of October in a tank top and shorts, sweating and cursing Mother Nature.

Needless to say it was a surprise to see that the temperature would be this chilly next week. It has been a long time since we had "normal" seasons here and I sit here wondering if these are normal temps for this time of year. I forget. I've noticed that the leaves are turning beautiful shades of yellow and orange.

I will say though, regardless of how chilly it will be, October is my favorite month and it will be here on Wednesday. I have my supply of Yankee Candle Autumn scents (the Cinnamon & Sugar one smells good enough to eat) and next week we'll decorate the inside and outside for Halloween. I'm having my yearly craving for crisp apples, apple pie and apple crisp. It usually hits me this time of year.

With the chilly temperatures heading our way, I'll have to break out the Fall/Winter clothing, flannel sheets and my fluffy pink bathrobe. I hadn't planned on doing this for another month or so....*sighs*. However, on the bright side of things, it will be the perfect weather at night to cuddle, enjoy some hot chocolate, and share a bowl of apple crisp with my sweetie.

What Will I Do?

So, it's Saturday and for the first time in months, I actually have Saturdays off! What will I do? I'm very much used to working the late shift Saturday nights making my Saturday mornings/afternoons routine. It was so nice sleeping in until 9 this morning, enjoying my morning coffee and doing things at my own pace. I no longer have to rush around to get things done in time before my shift would start.

I have nothing exciting planned. I want to do my weekly housework. I am one of the few woman who find cleaning relaxing and somewhat fun. I know that I need to hem pants and hang a couple of things on the wall that we recently purchased. Laundry needs to be done and there are a few dishes in the sink. I know that later we'll probably watch a couple of movies that we haven't had time to watch and order out for dinner. Anything goes today!

So, with that....I am off!! To all of those who have Saturdays off...ENJOY!!!

The Story Of Us

I'm not sure if you've seen the movie 'The Story Of Us', but if you haven't, it's a must see. Michelle Pfeiffer and Bruce Willis star in this movie about a married couple who are on the verge of getting a divorce, however, after being apart for the summer they realize that they are an "us" and end up staying together. It's an excellent movie (a favorite of mine) and I always find myself needing tissues throughout the movie, especially the end.

I watched it today probably for the one hundreth time. I couldn't even tell you the first time I saw the movie. All I know is I've owned a copy of it for many years and every so often, I pop it in the DVD player, grab some tissues and watch it. As many times as I've seen it I will say that today the movie hit home more so than it ever has. For the first time, the movie made perfect sense.

My partner and I don't have children and we haven't been together for 15+ years (like the couple in the movie) but it's the concept that made perfect sense to me. We are an "us" and that stands for a lot of things. We have a history together and histories don't happen overnight. We've had good times together and bad times, but there have been plenty more good times than bad. We have seen each other at our worst...our darkest moments. We are lovers and partners yet we also have a friendship that runs very deep. I've always believed that wives/husbands/lovers need to have a solid friendship. As important as it is to love the one you're with, it's just as important to like them too.

We have a home that has filled up over the years with items that tell a story. We have moments that we joke about that only the two of us would understand. We have words or phrases that we laugh at that would make no sense to anyone else. We have a rhythm together that is our own. We have forgiven each other for mistakes made and we realize that neither one of us is perfect. We have days where we are glued to each other's side, yet we also have days where we get irritated with each other if we're in the same room together.

Most importantly though is our history. It goes way back to a time when we joked about Fruit Loops and Barbie Dolls. A time when we made marinated chicken kabobs together. A time when we laughed hysterically at old Country Songs and Gold Bond Powder. That is where the story began...the story of us.

A Trip To The Mall

Today I wasn't feeling completely better, however, my partner and I went to the mall for the day. Normally I'm not a mall shopper for many reasons, but I was on a mission. Besides my mission, which was accomplished within an hour, I just wanted to get out for the day and have some fun.

Where I grew up we had a tiny mall. To even use the word "mall" to describe this one small indoor strip of stores makes me cringe, but hey, at the time that's all we had. To go to the "big malls" required a trip that involved at least an hours drive. The mall was the place to hang out, have fun.

So, today for some reason, the mall didn't annoy me as it normally does. My partner and I hung and we had a blast! We laughed hysterically as I tried on obnoxious hats and busted a little groove. I sprayed almost every kind of body spray on me until my sense of smell became numb. We smelled every candle in the Yankee Candle store until everyone started smelling the same.

We probably ate to much food, but how can you resist the smell of foods from almost every part of the world. I drank to much coffee at the Starbucks located right in the middle of the mall. We went to Borders and walked out with a picture book for our dog (he's our 4 legged child..what else can I say). We laughed at things that we hadn't laughed at in years. And, we managed to walk out without purchasing the tempting cookies that scream, "EAT ME!"

We had fun. It was great to get out and we spent time together that was much needed. We reconnected. We laughed and joked around like we did years ago. There were no phones to answer. The laptop was at home. It was just us in this huge building that houses a ton of overpriced stores, hormonal teens, speed walkers, PTA moms and the annoying vendors that chase you half way across the mall. I say, "Let's do it again."

The Inconvenient Virus

I remember years and years ago a few days before Christmas my brother had gotten up one morning and his eye was severely swollen and black and blue. Mind you, there was no logical explanation for this and it baffled my mother. Thankfully she had taken him to the doctors. A virus had settled behind his eye and had he gone to sleep that night, he would have died in his sleep. He was in the hospital for several days until it cleared up.

That is my first recollection of what I was to call 'the inconvenient virus." It was to become a lifetime of viruses that settle in various parts of the body (rather than a common cold or flu most times) that causes excruciating pain. I can remember my mother being in severe pain at times because of a virus that settled in her back. I would watch her walk across the kitchen breaking a cold sweat because the pain was so bad. She would always say, "I have a cold in my back."

It wasn't until after I had Mono when I was in grade school that 'the inconvenient virus' started with me. I remember countless times a virus settling in my mouth and I wasn't able to eat or in my foot and I could barely walk. They would come without warning and disappear in a couple of days just as quick. I even had one that settled in my eye and it mimicked pink eye. 99% of pink eye is bacterial, but I was the 1% who had the viral form. And, like regular viruses, there isn't anything that can be done. They have to run it's course.

Two days ago I had a little stiffness in my left shoulder and I thought, "Oh shit." It came on to quick and I just sighed and thought, "Please let it NOT be a virus." That night I woke up crying in such severe pain I couldn't move. It was a sleepless night. Yesterday I was on the sofa most of the day and last night it was another sleepless night. Today, thankfully, it has eased up some and I'm able to move around a bit more. But, that is where I have been the past couple of days.

I'm hoping that by tomorrow it will have gone away. I know my body is fighting off something because I have a fever. I have been sucking down vitamins and drinking lots of fluid. Hopefully that will do the trick!
