Over the years I've slowly lost faith in one thing or another. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes things just happen and you know it's beyond restoration despite efforts. That's life. It happens. You move on with a slight hope that things might change. Never lose hope.I will say that I've lost faith in the system. What system? It's the system that is supposed to provide assistance to those that can no longer work. It's the same system that continuously doles out thousands of dollars to those that make a career out of sucking the system dry. The well runs dry for those that really need it and their life and well being depends on it. The calls are never returned. My faith in that system has been deteriorating over the years. The past year has been the last straw for me.
My Mother In Law is no longer able to work. She has congestive heart failure, diabetes and a neurological disorder that disables her ability to walk any type of distance. Walking to the end of the short driveway is a challenge. She is no longer able to do her own housework. Most days she has trouble getting out of bed.
Her body is not responding to the many types of insulin that she has been prescribed. The doctors are stumped. She recently had to go almost 24 hours without eating for a blood sugar test. Her blood sugar level was over 500 when they tested her. There are another handful of health issues that she's having from the insulin not working. Her memory is slowly fading and, on occasion, she gets confused with simple things. She has her good days and her bad days.
This is a woman who has worked her entire life, sometimes two jobs. She even continued to work when her health went downhill. She was laid off from work a year ago partly due to her health and the company wasn't doing that well. She received a minimal amount of unemployment, but that ended a couple months ago. Her checks weren't even enough to cover her medications she needs every month. It's been two months since she's had any income and she is without health insurance.
She has applied for disability, but that's been an ongoing process (and headache) for the past few months. At the rate their going, she probably won't see any money from them until the Spring or Summer IF she's even approved. Welfare said that they would provide some assistance after she got her last unemployment check, but it's been almost two months. She has went down to the office twice and called several times a week. Lori has even called several times. No one calls back. It sickens me.
We are moving into Lori's house next door in January and Mom will be living with us. It's for the best. We had plans on moving there in the future, but with all of this going on, it needs to happen sooner. We aren't able to afford the 100% of the bills and living expenses at the other house in addition to the ones here. We don't know if and when disability will kick in. We do know that whatever she does get from welfare won't be enough for her to make ends meet every month. She is also at the point where she needs assistance with daily living.
I have lost faith in the system that is supposed to be there for people like my Mother In Law. There are so many people that genuinely need assistance, but are put off, ignored or denied because the money isn't there. I don't know where they get the assumption that people like my Mother In Law can go weeks and months without income. She's on medications that her life depends on.
I do hope that things change in the future, but I'm not holding out hope for this one.
